Law making
In recent years the legislative process has been central to the work of the Parliament and Government programme. Making the law is one of Parliament’s best known functions and many of our projects consider how this process operates and whether areas for reform can be identified.
- We have published a major piece of research entitled Law in the Making: Influence and Change in the Legislative Process, which analyses the influences and elements that come together to make an act of Parliament. The research draws upon the findings from five detailed case studies
and over 80 exclusive interviews with ministers, MPs, peers, government
and parliamentary officials and pressure groups. This was preceded by a discussion paper, available for free download.
- We also have a range of resources available on how Parliament operates. Your Parliament is a guide for those who would like to find out about what takes place in Parliament. More detailed information can be found in the briefing papers in the Issues in Law Making series. The report Parliament, Politics and Law Making is a collection of essays exploring recent issues and developments in the legislative process.
